Ying Chen Fang
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Oral Roberts University
Purpose and Method of Study: The purpose of this study is to delve into the bicultural heritage and educational experiences of East Asian American women, exploring their path to leadership roles. Using qualitative research methods, including semi-structured interviews, the investigation sheds light on the unique challenges and opportunities faced by East Asian American women leaders as they progress on their leadership journey. The focus of the study was to gain a deeper understanding of the perspectives and experiences of these women. Findings and Conclusions: The study employed a qualitative narrative approach (Creswell, 2013) to gather data, and three main themes emerged from the analysis: the path to leadership, challenges in achieving leadership in the profession, and the advantages and opportunities of the participants' international bicultural backgrounds. Participants described the importance of mentors, the necessity of breaking stereotypes, and international study as crucial factors in their careers. They discussed the challenges of communication barriers, invisibility, and lack of professional connections as well as the advantages and opportunities their international backgrounds provided, including their unique skills and perspectives. The lives and careers of these women serve as inspiration and encouragement for the next generation of Asian American women leaders.
