Building a Culture of Care for Student Activities Staff
Amanda Gelber
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
Student activities are an important part of the student life experience on college campuses (Barham & Winston, 2006). Student activities professionals are key to helping students become, and stay, engaged during their educational experience (Komives, 2019). While student activities staff provide care and support, the staff themselves are not experiencing a culture of care as employees (De Sawal, et al., 2022). These professionals may also experience low pay and increased job responsibilities that can create a physical toll causing burnout and lack of wellness (De Sawal, et al., 2022). The resulting stress often leads to the attrition of staff (De Sawal, et al., 2022). This study used a mixed-methods approach including surveys and semi-structured interviews to determine the primary elements of a culture of care for student activities staff on college campuses and seek recommendations for increasing the culture of care in higher education. The population sample was recruited through utilizing the National Association of Campus Activities (NACA) professional network. The survey was adapted from Dr. Laurie Schreiner's Thriving Quotient Survey for Student Affairs staff that they developed based on the PERMA Framework by Seligman (2011). The elements of thriving guided the data analysis to determine what was most important to student activities professionals. The results of this study produced many improvements and recommendations to better the culture of care for staff. Based on the results of this study, I created a model called the COMPASS of Care that staff, supervisors, upper-level administrators, and human resources can utilize to establish or redefine an open and caring environment to retain staff members at a higher rate.
