This report of the Faculty Senate regarding faculty collective bargaining discusses faculty professional interests, how faculty interests may be advanced, and who is available to help. The faculty interests include: (1) academic freedom; (2) professional tenure; (3) adequate compensation; (4) discrimination in employment practices; (5) fringe benefits; (6) faculty participation in institutional policymaking; (7) due process and other procedural safeguards in confrontations; (8) teaching, library, office and research space and facilitites; (9) secretarial and other subprofessional assistance; (10) support of professional travel; (11) sabbatical and other leave policy; (12) teaching load; and (13) democratic practice in departmental affairs. Faculty interests may be advanced by: (1) setting up informal channels of communication; (2) shared authority; and (3) contract or union style agreements. Organizations available to help include: the American Association of University Professors, the National Society of Professors, the Michigan Association of Higher Education, and the American Federation of Teachers.
