Masson, Michael E. J. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 1982
Findings indicate that, when skimming, readers find it difficult to perceptually select from a passage information that is relevant to their goal in skimming. There was a reaction time advantage for verification of gist-relevant information as opposed to details, which tended to increase with reading rate. (Author/PN)

Flynn, Peggy – Journal of Reading, 1977
Teaching skimming techniques in a college compensatory reading course helped students gain in both speed and comprehension skills. (MKM)
Descriptors: Compensatory Education, Higher Education, Reading Comprehension, Reading Instruction
Eanet, Marilyn G.; Meeks, Jane Warren – 1979
A study was devised to determine whether internal reading flexibility would be manifested by individual proficient readers, operating in the "rauding" mode (typical reading manner), and observed in a natural setting reading passages from textbook materials. Reading times were examined using both number of standard words and number of…

Steiner, Karen – Journal of Reading, 1978
Reviews materials on speed reading located in the ERIC data base. (MKM)
Descriptors: Elementary Secondary Education, Higher Education, Literature Reviews, Reading Rate

Cranney, A. Garr; And Others – Journal of Reading, 1982
Describes a study that compared the reading efficiency at three different reading rates of five rapid readers and two control groups. Reports that the rapid readers demonstrated superiority in rate and comprehension in free recall situations. (FL)
Descriptors: College Students, Higher Education, Reading Comprehension, Reading Instruction
Minery, Bonnie – 1988
A study examined the influence of the computer management feature of a commercially prepared speed reading software package on the reading rate and attitudes of college students towards computers as instructional tools. Subjects, 66 college freshman from lower-middle to middle socio-economic brackets (and divided into control and experimental…

Moss, Michael J. – Journal of Research in Reading, 1980
Reports that reading rate gains that may have been derived from a film-aided speed reading course were not retained when the subjects encountered difficult reading material. (FL)
Descriptors: Audiovisual Aids, Higher Education, Reading Comprehension, Reading Improvement

Collins, Cathy – Reading Improvement, 1979
Reports an investigation of the effectiveness of "Speedway: The Action Way to Read" in increasing the reading rate and efficiency of adult readers. (FL)
Descriptors: Adults, Higher Education, Program Evaluation, Reading Comprehension
Wallace, William P. – 1983
To determine whether the impressive rates for speed reading (e.g., 500 words per minute) can be approximated in speed listening, two experiments compared the comprehension level of material heard at a normal speaking rate with that heard at accelerated rates. In the first experiment, the major demonstration experiment, three groups of college…

Feeley, Joan T.; Wepner, Shelley B. – 1986
College students in a reading rate improvement course participated in a study (1) to determine the effects of text displayed on the computer screen as opposed to the printed page and (2) to see if computerized speed reading programs changed student attitudes toward reading efficiency exercises. Subjects, 26 students of similar reading…

Wepner, Shelley B.; And Others – Journal of Reading, 1990
Evaluates the effectiveness of the Sack-Yourman Developmental Speed Reading Course software program designed to increase reading rate and comprehension. Finds the software program effective in allowing students to quickly move from "chore" operations and didactic sections to "real" reading. Offers specific recommendations for…

Wepner, Shelley B.; Feeley, Joan T. – 1987
Focusing on improving college students' reading efficiency, a study investigated whether a commercially-prepared computerized speed reading package, Speed Reader II, could be utilized as effectively as traditionally printed text. Subjects were 70 college freshmen from a college reading and rate improvement course with borderline scores on the…

Grellet, Francoise – 1981
This book is presented for teachers who do not use a reading course and who wish to produce their own material as well as for individuals developing materials for tailor-made courses. Various types of reading comprehension exercises are described and classified. The exercise-types suggested can be adapted for all reading levels. The book begins…
