Examined alcohol and drug taking behavior of approximately 1,000 students at public university in deep South. Contrary to popularized regional image of more conservative behavior toward drugs and alcohol, results indicated that sampled college students reflect substance use behaviors of students elsewhere in several respects. Haberman, Shirley E. – Journal of Alcohol and Drug Education, 1994
Examined alcohol and drug use of 440 college students. Ninety percent indicated that they currently used alcohol or had done so in past; 39% used alcohol at least weekly; and less than 1% reported daily use. Forty percent indicated previous or current marijuana use, 11% cocaine, and 11% "speed" or other stimulants. (Author/NB)

Edwards, John J.; Kemp, Gina C. – Journal of Offender Rehabilitation, 1995
Explores the effects of race and drug of choice among male offenders (n=53) in a minimum security prison. Results indicate that the best adjusted offenders were blacks who identified marijuana as their drug of choice, while the most poorly adjusted offenders were blacks who identified cocaine as their drug of choice. This study examined stages of drug habit acquisition and change among college students, basing the proposed stages of drug use on the Multi-Component Motivational Stages prevention model.
