Compared sex role attributes of male alcoholic veterans to those of 81 nonalcoholic veterans and 386 college students. Results showed male alcoholics were sex-typed more frequently as feminine than masculine. Results were interpreted as a consequence, not a cause of the disorder and were considered reversible with sustained sobriety. (JAC)

Examines the relationship between prior alcohol use in 121 freshmen and their fraternity-pledging decisions. Matriculating males with a history of high alcohol consumption pledged fraternities in significantly greater proportions than those in medium- and low-consumption categories. Findings support the view that instead of causing heavy drinking,…

Lisman, Stephen A.; And Others – 1987
Alcohol researchers have sought to characterize the relationship between cue responsivity and alcohol consumption by alcoholics. This study used the beverage tasting paradigm to test for differences in cue responsivity in adolescent sons of alcoholics. It was hypothesized that, compared to sons of nonalcoholics, sons of alcoholics would be more…

Bander, Karen W.; And Others – Journal of Medical Education, 1987
A survey of several hundred internists, surgeons, and psychiatrists concerning their attitudes toward female and male alcoholics, alcoholism, the adequacy of their education about alcoholism, methods of handling alcoholics, and desire to learn about alcoholism is reported. Implications for continuing professional education are discussed. (MSE)
