Sutherland, Kenton – Change, 1975
Opened in 1968 to meet the educational needs of San Mateo County, Canada College did not begin to attract Spanish-speaking students until 1971 when it created a program of courses to deal with English language problems and other courses taught bilingually or entirely in Spanish. A recent study of "A Better Chance" students indicates that minority students do succeed at selective colleges but that their successes cannot be predicted by SAT scores alone. Findings of a study of 334 black and Spanish-surnamed students enrolled at 20 top American colleges are reported. (LBH)
