Studies of the economic impact of a college on the surrounding community are encouraged and outlined. The data necessary for such a study includes spending by college, faculty, and students; town tax receipts; and visitors' numbers and spending graphically prepared, summarized and released to the media. At the federal level, community colleges feel they don't get their fair share (e.g., voc-ed funds). Problems at the state level evolve from their jurisdiction under the Department of Education. Saint Louis University has taken to heart its responsibility to the communities surrounding its metropolitan campuses in a series of cooperative neighborhood renewal projects. With both financial resources and ongoing commitment, the university has brought about substantial revitalization. (MSE)

Instead of a campus, the Community College of Vermont has four regional field sites. At regular intervals, the community is asked what it wants and needs to learn. Teachers are found, curricula developed, and instruction begun. At the end of a course students and teachers write narrative evaluations of learning outcomes. (Author/LBH)

South Carolina University student activity in the Special Olympics for mentally retarded youngsters and dozens of other community and fund-raising activities are described. One of the primary obligations of a university today is to participate in community building. A university's liaison with regional businesses means financial support, political leverage, the revitalization of key programs, and the development of pride and identity reaching beyond campus boundaries.(MLW)

The spirit of cooperation between business and higher education helps to strengthen America's private sector. Cooperative programs with Deere and Company and Rome Industries, with the fast food industry (Chick-fil-A), and with a development firm (Garden Lakes Company) are described. (MLW)

The experiences of Cuyahoga Community College when its board of trustees dwindled to six members are described. Their tripartite committee system was abandoned in favor of a committee-of-the whole format and stronger orientation measures were developed to accommodate the impending influx of new trustees in the years ahead.
