College administrators must find a balance between their administrative roles and the responsibility of assuring academic freedom to faculty. An exploratory study suggests that legal and medical training can have a negative impact on marriage: role behaviors learned during professional socialization and transferred to the spouse role are not conducive to a satisfying marital relationship, and student and spouse roles compete for time and personal commitment. In a review of literature on college teaching and advising, characteristics of each are outlined and compared. Parallels between processes of teaching and advising are drawn. The loss of balance among the functions of the research university (instruction, basic and applied research, and professional training and service) produces a crisis of values.
