Allmon, Warren Douglas – Journal of Geological Education, 1987
Discusses some parallels that seem to exist between mass extinction recognizable in the geologic record and the impending extinction of a significant proportion of the earth's species due largely to tropical deforestation. Describes some recent theories of causal factors and periodicities in mass extinction. (Author/TW)
Descriptors: College Science, Ecological Factors, Ecology, Endangered Species

Johnson, Donn M. – Journal of Economic Education, 1995
Contends that the traditional approach to the economics of pollution deals only with the special case of damage coming from the per-period flow of the pollutant. Examines the limitations of the traditional flow approach. Summarizes fundamental advances in the economic theory of stock pollutants using graphical descriptions. (CFR)

Schneider, Stephen H. – Issues in Science and Technology, 1988
Discusses the trend toward more "earth-as-a-system" approaches in research and teaching about global science. Uses the "greenhouse effect" as a prototypical global change problem that requires interdisciplinary problem-solving approaches. (TW)

Schwartz, Alan M.; Miles, John – Environmental Professional, 1987
Reports on the status of environmental studies programs, as determined at a workshop held in conjunction with the 1986 annual conference of the North American Association for Environmental Education. Focuses on environmental studies program development since 1976. (TW)

Nichols, James D. – Bioscience, 1992
Describes advances in capture-recapture modeling, including the biologically motivated emphasis on model-based hypothesis testing and the development of models for spatially stratified populations. Discusses the severe problems associated with count statistics reflecting unknown sampling fractions. (67 references) (KR)

Lisowski, Marylin; Disinger, John F. – Journal of Environmental Education, 1991
This study focuses on secondary students' (n=79) understanding of ecological concepts and the influence of field instruction strategies on their understanding and retention. Results indicate all groups exhibited statistically significant posttest gains and showed evidence of retaining the targeted concepts. (Author/MCO)

Arbona, Sonia I.; Hunter, John M. – Journal of Geography, 1995
Presents the results of a field study done on 7 wells providing 37% of the total aquifer production for 4 municipalities in Puerto Rico. Each sampled well showed signs of contamination by heavy metals, nitrate, and semivolatile organic compounds. Although found in low concentrations, current development threatens groundwater quality. (MJP)

Vinokurova, U. A. – Soviet Education, 1990
Examines ways in which ecological factors have influenced education among Russia's northern nationalities. Considers differences in socialization resulting from northerners' traditionalism and unique attachment to their environment. Makes preliminary conclusions about educational outcomes in the north, including formation of a national…
