A Comparison of Student Outcomes in High Schools That Implement a Personalized Learning Model and Those That Implement a Traditional Model of Teaching in a Large Urban District

Personalized Learning is a teaching and learning philosophy that aims to meet the individual needs of each student by utilizing personal learning profiles, personal learning paths, competency-based learning, flexible learning environments, mentoring, and a culture of growth mindset. For the purpose of this study, a Personalized Learning school is any high school in the large, urban, Midwest district studied that implements these factors of Personalized Learning and is labeled a Personalized Learning school by the district. These identified schools receive professional development and funding to support the implementation of Personalized Learning in their schools. Consequently, traditional model schools are any public high school in the same district that is not a Personalized Learning school, specialty school, charter school, or alternative school. While all high schools in the district are required to administer the SAT as their accountability measure to satisfy ESSA, Personalized Learning schools tend to avoid whole group testing and test prep. Traditional model schools, on the other hand, may spend a significant portion of their instructional time preparing for standardized tests. Although some research does exist regarding what Personalized Learning is and schools' experiences with implementation, there is limited research on how Personalized Learning affects student outcomes. The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine the relationship between Personalized Learning and student outcomes when compared to traditional model schools. The student outcomes measured in this study are the overall SAT scores in reading and math, the percent of students who fall within the "meets" or "exceeds" standards categories on the SAT in reading and math, average attendance rates, average graduation rates, and the average score on the Supportive Learning Environment domain on the 5Essentials Survey that all schools in the district are asked to take. Research Questions: 1. What is the relationship, if any, between student outcomes in high schools that implement Personalized Learning and those that implement a traditional model of instruction? 1. What is the relationship between SAT outcomes: a) in the overall score in reading and in math? b) in the percent of students who fall within the "meets" or "exceeds" standards on the SAT in Reading and in math? 2. What is the relationship between student attendance rates and Personalized Learning? 3. What is the relationship between high school graduation rates and Personalized Learning? 4. What is the relationship between the score on the Supportive Learning Environment domain of the 5Essentials Survey and Personalized Learning?
