The Impact of Participating in an Esports Extracurricular Activity on Academic Achievement and Attendance of High School Students
Zachary P. Lynch Watchilla
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
The purpose of this study was to examine the Problem of Practice (POP) to determine if and how creating an Esports extracurricular program could potentially benefit and impact academic performance and attendance among high school students. The Dissertation in Practice (DIP) investigated how providing a daytime program could engage and motivate students to attend school more consistently and increase academic performance. Data collected during this study was inconclusive in supporting these claims. However, it appears the intervention worked for some individual students. Administrator, teacher, student, and parent testimonials suggest that students who participated in Esports were more likely to consider college opportunities, enhance social skills, increase motivation in school, foster a stronger sense of school spirit, and improve their ability to work with others through refined communication and social skills.
