Craig, Helen B.; And Others – American Annals of the Deaf, 1979
An otologic maintenance program, set up at the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf in 1977-78, established operational guidelines for the identification, recording, remediation, and follow-up of external and middle ear problems in children (2-21 years old) with severe or profound hearing loss. Beck, Frances W.; Rockhold, Thayne – Volta Review, 1979
The author provides suggestions for audiologic assessment and aural rehabilitation of mentally retarded hearing impaired children. A practical screening procedure is described, and specific aspects of auditory training are considered. (SBH)
Descriptors: Auditory Evaluation, Auditory Training, Evaluation Methods, Guidelines
Snijders-Oomen, Nan – B. C. Journal of Special Education, 1979
Problems with the diagnosis of autism in young children with hearing impairment are pointed out and data on nine autistic children (one to four years old) are presented and compared with the general behavior of nonspeaking children. (SBH)
Descriptors: Auditory Evaluation, Autism, Clinical Diagnosis, Etiology

Yoshinaga-Itano, Christine – Volta Review, 1999
This article presents information about the auditory and speech development of infants with normal hearing and those who are deaf or hard of hearing. Methods of assessing hearing, evidence of auditory learning prior to birth, behavior assessment procedures, hearing aid use, and early identification and speech development are discussed. (Contains…

Beauchaine, Kathryn L. – 1992
This paper addresses three areas related to amplification for infants and toddlers with hearing impairments: (1) identification issues as they relate to early amplification; (2) selection of amplification; and (3) assessment of aided function. Identification issues discussed include the goal of early identification of hearing loss and the impact…

Nickerson, Raymond S.; And Others – 1974
The factor of timing on intelligible speech among normally-hearing persons was studied to determine some ways in which it differs from the speech of the deaf. Additional data was gathered on the temporal aspects of the speech of deaf and hearing children and hearing adults. The data corroborated earlier studies indicating that (1) deaf speakers…

Matkin, Noel D. – 1969
To study the feasibility of using filtered environmental sounds as test stimuli to determine the auditory sensitivity of young children, a tape recorded test was prepared using environmental sounds which retain their identity when filtered. Twenty normal-hearing preschoolers and 40 hearing impaired children (20 with flat sensori-neural hearing…

Dahle, Arthur J.; And Others – Journal of Speech and Hearing Disorders, 1979
Audiological assessment of 86 children (mean age 38 months at last evaluation time) with congenital cytomegalovirus infection revealed progressive hearing loss in four of 12 Ss with sensorineural hearing impairments. Case descriptions documented the progression of the hearing loss. (Author)

Poissant, Sarah F.; Maxon, Antonia Brancia – Volta Review, 2001
Auditory performance of 40 5-year-old children was measured using a speech signal that simulated the amplified signal a child with hearing loss would hear. Subjects were restricted in their access to speech due to the hearing aid, the decreased sensation level (simulated hearing loss) at which they listened, and distance. (Contains references.)…

Goffman, Lisa; Ertmer, David J.; Erdle, Christa – Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 2002
A method is presented for examining change in motor patterns used to produce linguistic contrasts. In this case study, the method is applied to a child who experienced hearing loss at age 3 and received a multi-channel cochlear implant at 7. Post-implant, acoustic durations showed a maturational change. (Contains references.) (Author/CR)
