Memoirs of Loss as Popular Education: Five Palliative Caregivers Remember through the Healing Art of Hope and Love
Lander, Dorothy A.; Napier, Susan D.; Fry, Barb F.; Brander, Heather; Acton, Janice
Convergence, v38 n4 p121-139 2005
In this article, the authors explore the creative and expressive arts, specifically "memoirs of loss" as a healing resource that both engenders hope and love and meaning-filled care, and emancipatory and humanist popular education. The authors present some key definitions and the general background to this article's creation. Then, they expand on popular education as a theoretical framework and make the links among memoirs of loss, art forms, hope and love, palliative care and popular education. Finally, the authors draw on four exemplary memoirs that illustrate diverse art forms at the bedside and with the bereaved as pedagogies of hope and love. The authors present these four memoirs as narratives, which they then analyse using their unique dialogue theorising approach. The authors conclude with a summary of the implications of such memoirs for popular education.
