A Better Predictor for the Specialist in Blood Banking Certification Exam: Grade Point Average or Years of Blood Banking Work Experience
Chad A. Douglas
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, University of Arizona Global Campus
Specialists in blood banking help ensure the stability and safety of the blood supply needed to support the transfusion therapy needs of healthcare providers. Examples of their work include employing advanced procedures to determine blood types, identify antibodies, and consult on medical prescriptions for blood products. They also serve as leaders, educators, and advisors for reference laboratories, blood centers, laboratory information systems, consumer safety departments, and more. Becoming a specialist requires a degree, work experience, and passing a certification exam. Certification programs help students obtain laboratory work experience while preparing for the exam, The purpose of this nonexperimental quantitative correlational study was to determine if a predictive relationship exists between a LifeShare SBB program applicant's university grade point average or years of work experience and their test performance on the SBB(ASCP) certification exam. Test performance predictably improved with higher grade point averages, but declined after 5 years of work experience. The findings have implications for SBB program admissions criteria. Future research could focus on correlations between exam success and student confidence, work experience, educational fatigue, and influences such as gender or family and home responsibilities.
