Exceptionality Education International, v34 n2 p1-16 2024
A mixed-methods research design was employed to explore the attitudes of typically developing elementary school students (students 8 through 13 years of age; in the United States, third through eighth grade) toward individuals with disabilities. The intervention consisted of person-centred videos that depicted productive, successful people with disabilities accomplishing life tasks were shown during 1 week of school assemblies in an elementary school that included kindergarten through eighth-grade students. Pre- and post-intervention, 42 students completed the Chedoke-McMaster Attitudes Towards Children With Handicaps (CATCH) survey (Rosenbaum et al., 1986; "CATCH," n.d.). Ten students participated in a 40-minute focus-group session after the intervention. Results showed an increase in the affective and cognitive components of students' attitudes post-intervention with no change in the behavioural component of students' attitudes. Limitations, implications, and suggestions for future research are discussed.
