Increasing Reading Proficiency in Low-Performing Schools, Focus on Grade One Implementation of Fundations
Kamika D. Dixon
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
The purpose of this study was to examine how the implementation of the Wilson's Language Training program, Fundations, influences the reading growth of first-grade graders. Reading proficiency at the school in this study was quite low at six percent. During the intervention, emphasis was placed on phonemic awareness. The Wilson's Fundations program is a systematic, explicit, and structured multi-sensory language program. (Wilson Language Training, 2023, para. 1) A sample group of six first-grade students were chosen based on Reading scores from the NWEA MAP test. The MAP test is a computerized, untimed, adaptive test that assesses students' academic progress. Once the group was chosen, direct small-group instruction was given four days per week at 25 minutes per session over an eight-week span. During the sessions, the Fundations program was used to help with phonemic awareness and fluency. During the study, progress monitoring was administered on the fifth day of each week. Letter recognition and sounds, phonemic awareness, and sight word recognition data were collected and analyzed.
