This set of learning modules was developed during a project to deliver workplace literacy instruction to individuals employed in the more than 50 businesses related to the activities of the Port of Baltimore. It is intended to accomplish the following objectives: familiarize students with basic concepts of geography; give students knowledge of geographic techniques, basic cartographic techniques and analysis, information about world trade and transport, knowledge of ongoing issues in world geography, and a concept of regional and cultural relativity; enhance students' knowledge of the world's regions and nations; familiarize students with common trade routes; and enhance students' understanding of the world marketplace. The first module is intended to introduce students to the course objectives and intent and determine the extent of their geographic knowledge. The following topics are covered in the remaining seven modules: geographic techniques and concepts; the North Atlantic region; South America; Africa; the Middle East; Northern and Central Asia; and East Asia, Pacifica, and Australia.
