Compared homeless aged men who live on the Bowry or in hotel rooms in New York City. Results showed homelessness is not a uniform category. Sociability differentiated them from nonhomeless age peers and socioeconomic status differentiated the two groups; also found differences in each groups' social adaptation. (Author/JAC)

Suggests scientific investigations of the concept of friendship have been hampered by inadequate conceptualizations. By utilizing a social relations perspective and a network analysis methodology, shows how to overcome the limitations of previous conceptualizations and to attain a more developed scientific grasp of friendship. Describes an experimental program focusing on network approaches to the solution of social work clients' problems. The sample was composed of 156 residents of a Manhattan hotel. Only 16 percent of the problems were successfully resolved through network interventions, although some problems were more amenable to intervention than others. (JAC)
