This paper describes and explains a classroom exercise in French translation, with a view to promoting translation as an integral part of language instruction, particularly at the third-year college level when the student can be expected to have acquired an advanced knowledge of the parts of speech, of the grammatical distribution and their semantic value. Students were asked to translate into English a passage from a personal letter written in French. A few days later, when the students were asked to hand in their translations, the original text was also withdrawn, and the translations were redistributed, each student receiving someone else's English version to translate back into French, though not necessarily into the original version. Through a comparison of individual student sentences with the original passage, a number of grammatical, syntactic, and semantic problems were explained, in addition to several translation techniques.
