Huang, Ming S. – Journal of Psychology, 1983
Supports the hypothesis that children are able to comprehend embedded sentences with semantic constraints at an earlier age than they can understand embedded sentences without such constraints. Subjects were 161 children ranging in age from 5 years to 14 years, 11 months. (Author/RH)

Langford, J.; Holmes, V. M. – Cognition, 1979
Two experiments indicated that sentence verification times were significantly longer when a discrepancy between target sentence and context was in the syntactic presupposition, rather than in the assertion. Findings are best explained by a structural hypothesis, not by strategies designed to locate given and new information. (Author/CP)

Wykes, Til – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1981
Investigated five-year-olds' abilities to determine the reference of anaphoric pronouns. Children had difficulty when a sentence contained more than one pronoun, especially when assigning the reference of a pronoun requiring an inference. The children's difficulties stemmed from forgetting premise information and from having problems in carrying…

Stirling, Lesley; Wales, Roger – Language and Cognitive Processes, 1996
Examines, through two studies, how prosodic information affects syntactic processing in locally ambiguous sentences. The first study dealt with people's judgments of the continuation of locally ambiguous sentence fragments of differing lengths. The second concerned ratings of normality of sentence types with differing contours. (27 references)…

Siewierska, Anna – Journal of Linguistics, 1993
An analysis of Polish transitive clause order is presented from the perspective of two competing word order principles: the form-driven principle of syntactic weight proposed by Hawkins and the pragmatically based Topic-Comment principle. The Topic-Comment principle is shown to be more consistently reflected in Polish transitive order. (Contains…

Hing, Leong Sook – Guidelines, 1993
Some differences between Western and Chinese thought patterns are highlighted to help language teachers better prepare teaching strategies for Chinese-speaking students. Differences discussed include emphasis given to bigger/smaller units, tense, direct/indirect expression, individualism, appropriate behavior, linear vs. circular thinking…

Paltridge, Brian – Applied Linguistics, 1994
Several examples of genre analysis are examined to identify criteria employed for the identification of textual boundaries. The conclusion is that there are nonlinguistic reasons for generic staging in texts and that the search for structural divisions is a search for cognitive boundaries in terms of convention, appropriacy, and content. (42…

Collins, Peter C. – World Englishes, 1996
Tests claims regarding "get"-passives in English via interrogation of a set of written and spoken corpora. The data suggest that "get"-passives are often associated with two types of pragmatic implicature. Finally, the corpus provides evidence of three types of variation with 'get'-passives: regional, stylistic, and diachronic.…

Massone, Maria Ignacia; Curiel, Monica – Sign Language Studies, 2004
This article focuses on word order - the order of constituents in the sentence - as one way in which languages establish the relationship between a verb and its arguments. The spoken languages of the world have been classified into three, major word-order types: SVO, VSO, and SOV. Greenberg' work (1963) on language typology has been a stimulus to…

Dorgeloh, Heidrun – 1994
Locative inversion, one aspect of word order in English discourse in which the positions of verb and noun phrase are inverted (e.g., "in front of the house is a tree"), is examined. It is argued that inversions after deictic adverbs and those after non-deictic, locative constituents are related, both representing devices: (1) expressing point of…

van de Gein, Jannemieke – 1991
This book presents the final report on a study into the effects of grammar instruction upon aspects of the writing of nine-year-old students. After an introductory chapter, the second chapter expounds the theoretical background to the study. The third chapter of the book introduces the experimental programs, the dependent variables, and the…

Naoi, Kazuhiro – 1989
This study views structure-dependence as a Universal Grammar (UG) principle and explores how and why children are able to attain the target grammar, in this case, the subject-auxiliary inversion rule. The hypothesis was tested that second language (L2) acquisition is guided by UG. In other words, L2 learners also adopt the structure-dependent…

Ayres, Glenn – Kansas Working Papers in Linguistics, 1990
Reflexives and reciprocals in Ixil, a Mayan language of Guatemala, appear to have features that distinguish them from reflexives surveyed in typological studies such as Faltz (1985) and Geniusiene (1987). Third person reflexives and reciprocals seem to have the form of a possessed noun optionally followed by a possessor NP. Moreover, reflexives…

Endo, Mika – 1989
The relationship between the realization of the argument-structure of a verb and its acquisition as a lexical item was investigated in a case study. The subject was a girl aged 2.3 years whose father was a native English-speaker and whose mother was a native Japanese speaker who also spoke English. The child had been born in the United States but…

Ford, Marilyn; Holmes, Virginia M. – Cognition, 1978
An experiment was conducted to determine whether the deep structure or the surface structure clause is more important as a speech planning unit, and whether syntactic decisions are made during sentence production. Results were discussed in relation to previous studies of pausing and speech disruption. (Author/CTM)
