Insufficient Cultural Humility in Counselor Education and Supervision Programs and Its Inimical Effects on African American Women's Wellness
Yolanda Crouch
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology
Several studies have related cultural stereotyping to psychological distress in individuals of color (Szymanski & Stewart, 2010). Shavers and Moore (2014) utilized Black feminist concept and examined the lived experiences of Black doctoral students and the part that experience plays in forming perseverance and wellness in doctoral programs. However, I was unable to identify any studies examining the experiences of African American Women in counselor education and supervision doctoral programs through the lens of Bandura's (1977) moral disengagement social cognitive theory. To date, no reviews have focused on the cultural disconnect of White faculty in predominantly White counselor education programs as it relates to the effects on African American women. In this study, I sought to increase knowledge about African American women by examining the relations between cultural disengagement of White counselor education faculty in predominantly White institutions and how it impacts their psychological health. Using Bandura's theory of moral disengagement and the cultural humility approach as the framework, I explored the phenomena of perceived cultural experiences of African American women at predominantly White institutions. It has been shown that low expectations and lack of support from educators are negatively linked to the academic successes of individuals of color. In addition, studies report learners of color are affected by faculty's perceptions of low expectations relating to their academic experience (Johnson-Ahorlu, 2012).
