An Exploratory Study of Women in the Health Professions Schools. Volume V: Women in Veterinary Medicine.
Urban and Rural Systems Associates, San Francisco, CA.
This exploratory study conducted for the Women's Action Program of HEW aimed at identifying and exploring the barriers to success that women face as school applicants and students and at describing the discrimination process, if any, that limits women's entry into the health professions. In this report on veterinary medicine, the profession is introduced, giving a sense of its history, work focus, organization, and women's roles and status in it. Current trends and issues, the organizational network, schools, and the professional training sequence of veterinary education are reviewed. Students are discussed with regard to what the profession is looking for in new members and to the students' own characteristics. Recommendations are offered for the associations, schools, and researchers. Statistical data, interview responses, and a bibliography are included. (LBH)
