A Feminist Critical Heuristic for Educational Policy Analysis: U.S. Social Emotional Learning Policy
Lemke, Melinda; Rogers, Kate – Journal of Education Policy, 2023
Social emotional learning (SEL) aims to promote student well-being, including healthy relationships that are free from harm like gender-based-violence (GBV). We investigated U.S. SEL policy through the lens of GBV, and how policy in the New York State (NYS) context operates to actualize or constrain SEL aims. To do so, we developed and applied a…

Berman, Ilana S.; Petretric, Patricia; Bridges, Ana J. – Journal of American College Health, 2021
Child maltreatment is associated with negative mental health outcomes including depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and anxiety. Maltreatment experiences can result in negative beliefs about safety and wellbeing, which may maintain negative mental health symptoms. Household dysfunction (eg, impaired caregiver) is considered less…

Engh Kraft, Lisbet; Rahm, GullBritt; Eriksson, Ulla-Britt – Journal of School Nursing, 2017
Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a global public health problem with major consequences for the individual child and society. An earlier Swedish study showed that the school nurses did not initially talk about nor mention CSA as one form of child abuse. For the child to receive adequate support, the disclosure is a precondition and is dependent on an…

Narayan, Angela J.; Atzl, Victoria M.; Merrick, Jillian S.; River, Laura M.; Peña, Rachel – ZERO TO THREE, 2019
Clinical research during the pregnancy period is maximally beneficial for participants if it is positive, inclusive, and therapeutic. We describe our ongoing study of ethnically diverse, low-income pregnant women and fathers-to-be that leverages participants' benevolent childhood experiences (BCEs) and promotes insight to counteract mental health…

Chilton, Mariana; Rabinowich, Jenny – Journal of Applied Research on Children, 2012
The causes and contexts of food insecurity among children in the U.S. are poorly understood because the prevalence of food insecurity at the "child" level is low compared to the prevalence of "household" food insecurity. In addition, caregivers may be reluctant to admit their children may not be getting enough food due to shame…

This study interviewed 29 women from various countries and spiritual backgrounds, between the ages of 16 and 67, seeking to better understand how dance/creative movement supports women during difficult life struggles such as trauma from abuse, relationship breakups, community violence and loss of self, and how it acts as a connection to the…

Deering, Rebecca; Mellor, David – Journal of Child Sexual Abuse, 2011
The limited findings on the impact of female-perpetrated sexual abuse of children are often contradictory, particularly in relation to males. In this exploratory qualitative study, a sample of nine men and five women who reported that they had been sexually abused by women in their childhood were recruited from the general community. They…

We also investigated the extent to which women's cognitive-affective sexual appraisals mediated these relationships. Participants were 272 female community college and university students. CSA…

All OECD governments want to give parents more choice in their work and family decisions. This book looks at the different ways in which governments support families. It seeks to provide answers to questions like: Is spending on family benefits going up, and how does it vary by the age of the child? Has the crisis affected public support for…
