Truman, David B. – 1970
Women are taught from a very early age that their major role to be played in society is that of wife and mother. This lesson appears to be reinforced throughout a girl's life, especially if she is educated in coeducational institutions. In such sexually mixed institutions, girls are not only in competition for men, but they are in competition with…

Diehl, Lesley A. – American Psychologist, 1986
The paradox of G. Stanley Hall seems to be his stance against coeducation simultaneous with his role as an educator of women. His theories must be considered in the context of the prevailing attitudes of the early 20th century toward the issue of sex differences. Hall was consistent in translating his theories into practice. (Author/VM)

Tyack, David; Hansot, Elisabeth – Educational Researcher, 1988
The complexities of institutional change and stability in terms of gender policies are analyzed. The following three questions are central to the discussion: (1) why did some policy changes take place with only minor controversy? (2) why did vehement policy talk affect practice so little? and (3) how did gender reforms alter educational…

Winchel, Ronald; And Others – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1974
Results indicate that increased cross-sex competition increases fear of success in females. It appears, however, that the motive is largely formed before a girl reaches high school and that females who have not learned to avoid success in the presence of male classmates in elementary school do not fear success. French, Jane – Educational Research, 1984
A verbatim transcription of a lesson in a class of 10- to 11-year-olds is analyzed to support the observation that, in mixed-sex classrooms, male pupils receive more teacher attention than females. Among the reasons found for this imbalance is the tendency of boys to engage in strategies to secure attention. (SK)

Coeducation has been nearly universal in public schools in the United States during the 20th century. Research conducted in the last decade has questioned the effectiveness of coed schooling with regard to the self-esteem and mathematics achievement of adolescent females. Bell, John F. – Educational Studies, 1989
Considers the problems involved with the comparison of science performance of pupils attending single-sex and mixed schools, in which the former achieve higher test scores. Concludes that it is not sensible to attribute differences directly to separation of pupils in schools by sex. Suggests that factors such as preselection of students by ability…

Negative reaction to the theories forwarded in Dr. Edward H. Clarke's 1873 treatise against coeducation, "Sex in Education or A Fair Chance for the Girls," has been largely neglected. Powell, Barbara S.; Powell, Arthur G. – Independent School, 1983
Girls who reject boy-girl social relations as the central concern of adolescence are best served by girls' schools where they can develop a complex sense of self including both risk taking and caring qualities. A study confirming that single sex schools promote girls' intellectual and leadership development is cited. (MJL)
