Results of a nationwide survey of 595 modern language departments conducted in December 1970. Data analyzed indicate that the proportion of women declines from 55 percent of all graduate students to 18 percent of all full-time professors to only 8 percent of graduate teaching faculty in departments with Ph.D. programs.
