This hearing was held to obtain testimony on H.R. 3859, a bill to authorize assistance to the Washington Center for Internship and Academic Seminars. The Center operates a partnership program that enables colleges and universities to extend their campuses to Washington, D.C. The Center provides an academic program that combines seminars and course work with the hands-on experience of work and service in offices of Members of Congress, Federal agencies, and private organizations related to making of policy. The Center also provides students with housing in Washington, D.C. More than 15,000 college students from more than 700 colleges and universities have participated in the Center's programs. One of the Center's goals is to encourage qualified young people to enter public service. This hearing contains prepared statements by Representative William Ford, the President of the Washington Center for Internship and Academic Seminars, the Director of the Office of Federal Relations of California State University, the Executive Director of the American Association of University Women, the Executive Director of the National Commission on Public Service, and an alumnus of the Washington Center program.
