Circle Time Curriculum Activities Around the Clock for Home-Based and Center-Based Infant/Toddler Child Care.
Rose, Madeline
Age-appropriate activities for children and curriculum guidelines for mothers operating family day care homes for infants and toddlers were developed with the goal of improving the quality of day care programming. Curriculum goals were to (1) facilitate children's achievement of self-identity and self-esteem; (2) provide an outlet for creative expression; (3) design learning experiences which would help children process information; (4) create a social environment which would facilitate social interaction; (5) provide and sequence experiences designed to help children develop fine and gross motor skills; and (6) offer opportunities for self-selected activities. Family day care home staff implemented and evaluated the training program. Basic principles of the curriculum were applied in a program for 2-year-old children who were receiving care in a preschool. Curriculum concepts were shared with a network of coworkers. It was concluded that the program was well received by caregivers. Children in home care enjoyed the activities. Appendices provide guidelines for presenting the caregiver training program, a form for program monitoring, a developmental checklist, an individual development chart, the infant/toddler curriculum framework, a daily schedule for family day care homes, activity cards for indoor and outdoor group activities and guided-choice activities, a diagram of learning centers in a double classroom, a daily schedule for child care centers, a sample menu, and a form for reporting children's progress.
