An Analysis of the Effects of Listener Responding and Tact Training on the Emergence of Intraverbals
Lori Lin Chamberlain
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology
This study compared the effects of listener training and tact training on the emergence of intraverbal responses in the form of foreign language equivalents of the native language. The study was based on Skinner's verbal operants with a focus on intraverbal responses. All participants received listener training and tact training after which a probe for emergent intraverbals was conducted. If intraverbals did not emerge after the listener training, procedural modifications were implemented. The participants were required to echo and tact the stimulus as they selected it. The procedural modification to embed the tact into listener training increased the number of emergent intraverbal responses for two of the four participants. All the participants engaged in more accurate intraverbal responses after tact training than after listener training regardless of procedural modifications. After instruction with an echoic to tact transfer procedure in the tact condition, if intraverbals did not emerge, the tact training was modified. The procedural modification in the tact condition was to prompt the tact of the visual stimuli with the English and Italian word. With the additional procedural modification, all four participants emitted emergent intraverbal responses. Finally, emergent intraverbals were more likely to occur after tact; however, listener training with an embedded tact increased the likelihood of intraverbal emergence.
