What Works Clearinghouse Rating
Rocchio, Frank – American School Board Journal, 1984
By using an energy audit, the Cheyenne Mountain School District No. 12 (Colorado) identified fuel-consuming areas in its schools and reduced the annual increases for fuel from 25 to 5 percent. Six steps to energy savings will work for other districts as well. (JW)
Descriptors: Budgeting, Budgets, Building Operation, Climate Control
DiMercurio, C. – American School and University, 1981
This first article in a series about cooling classrooms by ventilation explains that energy consumption for one day of refrigeration cooling is equal to energy use for 35 days of ventilation cooling. Schools using only refrigeration cooling are passing up energy savings that could be provided by ventilation cooling. (Author/MLF)
Descriptors: Air Conditioning Equipment, Climate Control, Cost Effectiveness, Elementary Secondary Education
Pierce, Roger A. – American School and University, 1980
A Florida campus became the laboratory for training energy technicians. The first year's class operation saved $37,500 in energy costs. (Author/MLF)
Descriptors: Climate Control, Conservation Education, Cost Effectiveness, Energy Conservation
Manzo, Joseph P. – Engineering Education, 1979
The survival of the consulting engineer depends on adequate training in environmental systems and energy technologies. A mechanical/electrical building systems curriculum is proposed. (Author/BB)
Descriptors: Air Conditioning, Architectural Education, Building Design, Building Systems
Beerman, Albert L. – Modern Schools, 1977
A comprehensive energy management program contains these basic parts: a plan with responsibility for performance, a system for monitoring and evaluating the results, and feedback to make sure the savings are maintained. (Author/MLF)
Descriptors: Administrative Policy, Administrator Guides, Climate Control, Cost Effectiveness
Harrison, David – 1978
The Solar Schoolhouse at the Lathrop E. Smith Environmental Education Center (Rockville, Maryland) is described. Background and construction information is given. Drawings of the Schoolhouse's four sides are provided, as well as drawings illustrating the greenhouse effect, a solar collector, the Schoolhouse's summer cooling and winter heating…

Nickisch, Marge Hill – 1981
The Nebraska Home Economics Energy Management Guide is composed of 25 individual lessons in 5 units plus a resource section. The introductory unit discusses basic principles in decision-making, the historical development of energy sources and use, and the rationale for energy management. The next four units focus on energy management in housing,…

Byalin, Joan – 1981
This book is the first in a series of Energy Tool Kits designed for women by Consumer Action Now, a non-profit organization devoted to promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy resources. Information is provided in 16 sections: introduction, home energy survey; caulking; weatherstripping (double-hung and sliding windows, and casement,…

Thomas, Stephen G.; And Others – 1984
Solar technology systems are being studied, managed, built and offered as an effective alternative energy option. This publication presents background material for the building and operation of better sunspaces and greenhouses. Recent developments in solar technology are explained and information on solar greenhouse and sunspace is provided (in…

Department of Energy, Washington, DC. Office of State and Local Programs. – 1978
This workbook provides a fill-in-the-blanks approach to an energy conservation program for schools which lack full-time engineering personnel. The generalized approach given here is not as detailed as an energy audit, but it allows school administrators, maintenance personnel, or building operators to analyze energy uses and to determine energy…

Federal Energy Administration, Washington, DC. – 1975
This pamphlet presents simple suggestions for energy conservation. Sections include: (1) In and around the home; (2) Using the family car; and (3) In the marketplace. The suggestions given are mostly common sense tips like dressing appropriately for either hot or cold weather, use electrical appliances and lights sparingly and at off-peak times,…

Rankins, William H., III; Wilson, David A. – 1976
This publication is a handbook for the do-it-yourselfer or anyone else interested in solar space and water heating. Described are methods for calculating sun angles, available energy, heating requirements, and solar heat storage. Also described are collector and system designs with mention of some design problems to avoid. Climatological data for…

Progressive Architecture, 1979
In part two of the interview, Fred Dubin discusses mechanical means of meeting the heating and air conditioning load. (Author/MLF)
Descriptors: Building Design, Climate Control, Efficiency, Energy Conservation
Birch, Anthony D. – American School and University, 1978
Because of the success of major plant retrofit, energy costs at a community college have dropped since 1971 even though both electrical rates and the size of the campus have increased. (Author/MLF)
Descriptors: Administration, Climate Control, Cost Effectiveness, Educational Facilities Improvement

McColl, Robert W. – Journal of Geography, 1978
Examines methods for determining thermal efficiency and measuring heat loss in the home. Suggests ways to conserve energy based upon (1) climatic environment and its impact on a structure, (2) physical location of buildings and their microclimate, and (3) behavior modification of the inhabitants. (Author)
