Review of programs initiated by various western countries in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)--government-initiated public and private programs to cope with the youth unemployment problem. (JT)

Summaries of eight titles of the reauthorized (for fiscal years 1979 through 1982) Comprehensive Employment and Training Act of 1973 (CETA) are presented and discussed. The new CETA will serve, essentially, to increase the earned income of the economically disadvantaged. (MF)

Describes the Referral/Employment Network for Elderly Workers (RENEW) in Georgia funded by the Department of Labor under Title IX of the Older Americans Act. The program recruits and trains older people (over age 55) to help other seniors find jobs. (MF)

Describes the Northwest Wisconsin Concentrated Employment Program, the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA) prime sponsor for ten northern Wisconsin counties. Primary occupations available to program participants are in wood products, paper industry, tool and die manufacturing, welding, meat cutting, and resorts and recreation. (MF)

Describes the job training programs at the Hampden District Regional Skills Center, Springfield, Massachusetts, financed under the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act of 1973. The center trains 650 persons at a time and places more than 800 trainees a year in jobs through involving industry in the planning and training. (MF)

The Private Sector Initiative Program (PSIP), Title VII of the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA), is planned to put employment and training back in private business through grants to employers for on-the-job training programs, with private industry councils as links between business and industry and the federal government. Part of the former Boston (Massachusetts) Navy Yard is now a job training center where Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA) participants are trained as welders, pipefitters, electronics technicans, mechanics, and other marine workers.
