A Question of Experience
Clement, Mary C.; Kistner, Warren; Moran, Wes
Principal Leadership, v5 n9 p58-62 May 2005
Developing best practices in the hiring of new teachers has become a necessity in times of teacher shortages. Personnel directors and principals charged with recruitment must be able to distinguish the most qualified applicants and to hire those with the most potential to succeed and remain in the profession. Behavior-based interviewing (BBI) is a technique that is often used in the business world, and implementation of BBI by educational employers may facilitate the candidate selection process, increasing recruitment and retention. Defined by Janz, Hellervik, and Gilmore in 1986 as "behavior description interviewing," BBI is based on the premise that past behavior is the best predictor of future performance. This article discusses this interviewing technique, which requires candidates to summarize and draw conclusions from their experience in order to produce a good idea of their future activities in the classroom. Includes a list of sample interview questions.
