Moving toward Action: An Assessment of Principal Supervisor Practices to Grow Principal Instructional Leadership
Stover, John Oliver, III
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Marymount University
Effective principal supervisors focus on building principals' instructional leadership capacity. Strategies that include data analysis, feedback loops, job-embedded practice, and executive coaching should be a part of every principal supervisor's repertoire of skills. Current research suggests principal supervisors should make specific teaching moves to support principals. While the types of activities principal supervisors use when working with principals are codified in standards, it is not known how principal supervisor translate that research into action. This paper focused on building understanding of principal supervisors' current practice by analyzing tools used in the field to support principals. The research answered the following questions: (a) What instructional areas do principal supervisors focus on when working with principals?, (b) Do principal supervisors focus on one instructional area or do they cover multiple areas when working with principals?, and (c) Which areas of instruction have the most effective tools? This descriptive qualitative study evaluated the coaching and feedback strategies principal supervisors who supervise K-12 principals in an urban district in the Mid-Atlantic Region of the United States employed when working with principals. The researcher gathered tools like protocols, meeting agendas, site visit plans, and presentations current principal supervisors used and assessed which instructional strategies were embedded in the tool, the quality of the tool, and the extent the tool covered multiple standards. The tools were rated using a modified rubric developed by a state education agency to assess the quality of instructional supervisor practice. The results of this research can be used to inform future research and improve current principal supervisor practice.
