The State of Yap, one of the four Federated States of Micronesia, is composed of the four adjoining islands of Yap, Gagil-Tamil, Map, and Rumung, plus 15 scattered atolls and small islands. Of the 9,400 inhabitants, about one third live on the outer islands. Yap has public and Catholic schools which follow a U.S. curriculum. Children are required to attend school through the eighth grade, or until they are 14 years old. The government operates 2 senior high schools, 1 middle school, and 29 elementary schools with 244 teachers. In the 1985/86 school year, 13 percent of the total government budget was allocated for public education.
