Peer Six: Six Projects Selected by the Participants in Teaching Library Skills, a Workshop June 27-July 1, 1977, University of Northern Iowa, Library Science Department.
Buckingham, Betty Jo
Participation in a workshop conducted for media library specialists developed team teaching projects to integrate library/media skills into the subject areas of their school curriculums. Six of the projects were selected for inclusion in this report. A dictionary skills game provides a fun way of learning for fifth graders while reinforcing dictionary skills and teaching the etymology of words. In the second, fairy tales are introduced to children with the aid of the Ginn 360 reading program to improve personal self image. A third integrates library skills instruction with classroom assignments on a junior high school level. Four activities correlated with a fifth grade social studies text in project four focus on biographies, the pronunciation key in a dictionary, and using the encyclopedia and atlas. In the fifth, fourth graders make their own books after watching the film "Ezra Jack Keats" in which he describes his writing and illustrating of a book. A combination of sound slides, film strips, and flash cards develop card catalog skills in the last of these projects. A number of short games and activities are also included for dry periods of instruction. (RAA)
