The purpose of this study is to determine how parents of Ascension Public School students, grades pre-kindergarten through fifth, view the lunches provided by the school district. A review of United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National School Lunch Program (NSLP) policies yielded ten major regulations with the greatest impact on student participation, particularly at the primary level. A five-point Likert scale survey was created to measure parents' views of the policies. The survey questions were developed to gather initial research, statistical data, broad insights, and quantifiable views with consideration to relevance of content to objectives, length, educational level, cultural/language adaptation while avoiding ambiguous and leading/biased questions. Queries were subjected to and passed the Lawshe Method for content validity and Cronbach's Alpha Test for reliability with scores of 1 and 0.86 respectively. The results of this exploration indicated parents have positive views of lunches served in Ascension Public primary schools, indicate the need for further research and making education and information regarding school meal policies readily available to parents/guardians. It is believed that educating parents on these policies will increase student participation in school meal programs. Any further research should contrast perspectives from other areas (parishes/counties) and explore the association between parental views of school lunches and to what extent, if any, those views have on student participation.
