The Impact of CHAMPS on the Exclusionary Discipline Incidents of African-American Boys
Russell-Smith, Saundra
ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, University of St. Francis
African-American boys who receive exclusionary discipline (i.e. in- or out-of-school suspensions) are overrepresented at the elementary (kindergarten through fifth grade) level. Although African-American boys comprised only 15% of the population of this school, they accounted for 70% of the exclusionary discipline incidents. This quasi-experimental quantitative study investigated the effectiveness of the implementation of CHAMPS, a behavior intervention, on the number of exclusionary discipline incidents for African-American boys. Ninety-three African-American boys participated in this study. The findings will impact both practice and research by giving administrators at the district level, building level, and classroom level some insight into how effective this behavior intervention is with not only the entire school population, but specifically with African-American boys.
