Gilley, Daryl V.; French, Russell L. – 1976
This study identified a set of six theoretical styles of learning which have as their base the individual's preferential sensory input mode. Styles involved in the study were based upon the visual, aural, haptic, interactive, print, and kinesthetic modalities. A multi-modal paired associates learning test (MMPALT) was used to determine the…

Elliott, Wanda – 1973
The major objective of this study was to compare the effects of two modalities of instruction and testing--aural and visual. Other considerations were sex differences in achievement and the exploration of a relationship between sex identity and achievement. The eighth grade boys and girls of average intelligence who participated in this study…

Gross, Thomas F. – Developmental Psychology, 1977
To determine if the modality in which children represent information in memory influences the process by which problems are solved, problem-solving strategy of deaf and hearing 10-year-old children was compared on a concept-discovery task. (JMB)

Kampwirth, Thomas J. – Exceptional Child, 1981
Results indicated no interaction between modality preference and reading method. The visual method of teaching resulted in higher achievement regardless of modality preference; however, children with an auditory modality preference were generally superior in achievement compared to those with a visual preference. Dunn, Rita; And Others – Clearing House, 1979
The Learning Style Inventory (LSI) measures an individual student's learning style and preference for physical learning environment. LSI scores for 321 students in grades 3, 6, and 7 were correlated to their self-concept scores. Eight LSI variables discriminated significantly between subjects with high and low self-concepts. (SJL)

Hoerr, Thomas R. – Educational Leadership, 1992
Faculty members of a St. Louis, Missouri, pre-K-6 school studied Harold Gardner's theories on multiple intelligences in "Frames of Mind" (1983) and developed a program based on 7 learning modalities. Although implementation varies by classroom, teachers are using all seven intelligences in designing instruction, and a faculty subgroup is…

Baumeister, Alfred A. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1974
Educable mental retardates and normal grade school students were presented seven classes of materials in both visual and auditory modalities for the determination of immediate memory span thresholds. Major conclusions included auditory presentation produces higher thresholds than visual, and retarded children may employ different processing…

Harvey, T. Edward; And Others – 1981
This study investigated the effect of culture on the cognitive styles of Polynesian Asian, and Caucasian Americans in a multicultural school setting. The study attempted to test the Hill scales of cognitive development to determine if they would be a valid predictor of individual cognitive styles. In addition, the investigation tested the popular…

La Sorte, Diane M. – 1980
A study was conducted to investigate the ability of children to determine meanings of derived words that have undergone a pronunciation shift while retaining a close orthographic relationship to their base words. A researcher-designed test was constructed using derived words that had their base word included in a "core list" of words at or below…

Douglas, Joan Delahanty – 1975
This study examined the role of visual and auditory presentation in memory encoding processes of 80 second-grade children, using the release-from-proactive-interference short-term memory (STM) paradigm. Words were presented over three trials within one of the presentation modes and one taxonomic category, followed by a fourth trial in which the…

Reiff, Judith C. – Psychology: A Quarterly Journal of Human Behavior, 1986
Children were administered the Learning Style Inventory. Analysis revealed that children across sex, grade, and race had a majority of no preferences for the variables considered. The auditory approach was the least preferred learning mode by all groups. Specific diagnosis concerning modality strengths will contribute to a youngster's success in…

Franz, Carleen – 2000
Nonverbal learning disorders are less common than the typical language-based learning disabilities identified by school staff. Appropriate intervention is highly dependent on the accurate diagnosis of this disorder. Emphasis on performance and behavior management often obscures the etiology of a child's difficulties and leads to ineffective…
