"Now, Let's Decide": Using Current Events to Practice Democracy
Beck, Terence A.; Parker, Walter C.
Social Studies and the Young Learner, v29 n3 p27-30 Jan-Feb 2017
The study of current events can take several forms, and the right current event to study as a class depends on the educational purposes, the curricular standards the authors want to address, and the resources they have available to meet them, and what the needs and abilities are of the students present in the class. In this article, they focus on current events that present a problem a public entity must solve. They describe a five-part decision-making framework designed for this purpose. In this framework, students (1) learn the basic facts of the current event; (2) identify the issues that are controversial; (3) deliberate on one of the issues; (4) dramatize the issue; and (5) share or publish students' decision and reasons.
