Wagner, Jim – 1982
The paper reviews research dealing with the process of reflective abstraction, analysis and modification of one's own behavior, in learning disabled students. A study was conducted to test the hypothesis that children with a working memory of three pieces of information, who are inclined to employ self-terminating processing strategies because of…

Ross, Hildy S.; Killey, Janet C. – Child Development, 1977
Thirty fourth-grade children were exposed in pairs to a series of slides and invited to take turns asking questions. Results showed retention to be significantly better for information acquired through the child's own questions as opposed to the information acquired through the partner's questions. (Author/JMB)

Turner, Lisa A.; Bray, Norman W. – American Journal of Mental Deficiency, 1985
The use of a rehearsal strategy by 10-, 12-, and 14-year-old mildly mentally retarded children and adolescents (N=39) was investigated using a self-paced recall readiness task. The task allowed Ss to study items in any order as many times as desired. Each group used rehearsal, as indicated by increasing study time patterns and the number of…

Markman, Ellen M. – Child Development, 1979
Results of three studies suggest that, to notice inconsistencies in prose, children have to encode and store information, draw relevant inferences, retrieve and maintain inferred propositions in working memory, and compare them. Third through sixth graders do not spontaneously carry out those processes that they are capable of carrying out. (JMB)

Geis, Mary Fulcher – Developmental Psychology, 1975
Second and sixth grade children's relative sensitivity to acoustic, semantic, and physical dimensions was inferred from the amount of release from proactive interference obtained for shifts along each dimension. (ED)

Prawat, Richard S.; Cancelli, Anthony – Developmental Psychology, 1976
This study assessed the recognition by conserving and nonconserving first graders, of true and false permise and inference sentences following story presentations. Conservers performed slightly better than nonconservers on sentences other than true inference sentences, thus indicating that concrete mental operations are related to the process of…

Naus, Mary J.; Ornstein, Peter A. – Developmental Psychology, 1977
In this study, third and sixth graders were tested in a recognition memory task with short lists of items from either one or two categories to investigate the influence of categorical information on retrieval processes. (Author/SB)

Deregowski, Jan B. – Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology, 1976
Concludes that the significant difference found between responses made to displayed drawings and those made to models suggests that, independently of the complexity of stimulus, encoding will not influence responses if the very economical process of simple coding can be used. (Author/AM)

Kail, Robert V., Jr.; Levine, Laura E. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1976
Seven and 10-year-olds were tested on memory and sex-role preference tasks. The memory task was the Wickens release from proactive inhibition paradigm in which short-term recall of words is tested on successive trials. Children selected favorite pictures from an array including masculine and feminine items. (JH)

McNamara, John K.; Wong, Bernice – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 2003
This study compared students with (n=20) and without (n=40) learning disabilities (LD) on their recall of academic information and information encountered in their everyday lives. Students with LD performed poorly on both types of recall, suggesting that they may have problems with retrieval and working memory. The availability of cues…

Liben, Lynn S. – Developmental Psychology, 1977
Research reports have indicated that children's memories for pictures or events improved between early and later recall sessions in conjunction with operative growth. This study attempted to determine (1) if any intervening operative training task would increase memory improvements, and (2) if exposure to the memory stimulus per se would enhance…

Das, J. P. – American Annals of the Deaf, 1983
Twenty-eight profoundly deaf students, aged eight to 11, did not recall spatial order of viewed pictures better than temporal order, were not less competent in probed recognition than 66 age-equivalent hearing students, and made fewer recognitions in temporal-probe than in spatial-probe conditions. Other results were found. (Author/MC)

Lazerson, Barbara Hunt; Irving, Eugene – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1976
A total of 96 binary statements were administered to 120 children randomly selected from 3 academic levels. The Constituent Comparison Model accounts for the results obtained in this study. (HS)

Svenson, Ola; Sjoberg, Kit – Journal of Experimental Education, 1981
Changes in children's cognitive strategies for solving simple subtractions were studied by analyzing verbal reports given immediately after each problem. The development of children's cognitive processes involved a gradual shift from more primitive and less demanding memory strategies to reconstructive memory processes to retrieval processes.…
