Guttentag, Robert E. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1984
Examines the relationship between the mental effort requirement of cumulative rehearsal and spontaneous utilization of the strategy by three groups of children (mean ages 7.6, 8.7, and 11.5 years). Results showed that the mental effort requirement of strategy use may influence children's strategy selection on memory tasks. (Author/CI)

Das, J. P.; And Others – Journal of School Psychology, 1990
Evaluated elementary school students (N=198) using six mental processing subtests of the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC) and three tests of planning. Results indicated orthogonal simultaneous and sequential factors emerged; the verbal simultaneous test was a good addition; and a "planning" factor identified by three…

Rabinowitz, F. Michael – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1981
Kindergarten and first grade children were trained to choose the middle-sized stimulus in either a single stimulus set or in each of two nonoverlapping stimulus sets. Findings were reported in terms of the assumption that cognitive processes are important in the intermediate-sized transposition paradigm. (Author/DB)

Cohen, Ronald L.; Gowen, Anne – Intelligence, 1978
Two experiments examined whether correlations between IQ and probed serial running memory depend on IQ-related individual differences in the retention of order information in short-term memory. Children's IQ correlated with memory, regardless of whether instructions emphasized serial or free recall; and with recent item but not recent order…

Leasak, Jerry; And Others – Alberta Journal of Educational Research, 1982
Uses fourth-grade classes (N=94) from four separate rural schools to measure increases in simultaneous and successive processing due to an intervention program to improve simultaneous processing in spelling, arithmetic, and reading used on two experimental classes. Individual marker tests show significant change, as do reading and arithmetic…

Leong, Che K. – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1980
The cognitive patterns of 58 "retarded" and 38 below-average readers were compared with controls, according to Luria's simultaneous and successive modes of information processing. Factor Analysis showed different cognitive patterns for disabled and nondisabled readers. Reading skills, rather than cognitive ability, were shown to be…

Emerson, Harriet F.; Gekoski, William L. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1980
The comprehension of sentences with "because" or "if" was investigated in children aged 2, 9-11, and 11. (Author/MP)

Ash, Anthony; And Others – Educational Psychology: An International Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1993
Reports on a study of 198 Canadian children, ages 4-8, on their understanding of the role of evidence on the formation of beliefs. Finds that younger children evaluate opinions based on their own beliefs about the situation; older children tend to ascribe knowledge to others on the basis of evidence available to those others. Gustafson, Brenda J.; Rowell, Patricia M. – Research in Science and Technological Education, 1998
Focuses on the responses of elementary school children (N=336) to an "Awareness of Technology Survey" question intended to explore how they would begin the technological problem-solving process. Contains 29 references. (DDR)

Anderson, R. N.; And Others – Alberta Journal of Educational Research, 1988
Examines relationships among teachers' and students' sense of efficacy, thinking skills, and student achievement. Results demonstrate clear relationships among the thinking, efficacy, and achievement of students; but relationships between teacher and student measures were ambiguous. Suggests that higher efficacy teachers tend to have a more…

Catherall, Robin W. – 1982
This exploratory study was aimed at uncovering children's beliefs and ideas about the human circulatory system. Thirty-two subjects, aged 7 to 14 years, were interviewed using a modification of Piaget's clinical method. The data were analyzed by developing a conceptual inventory of beliefs for each of five research questions. It was found that the…

Wagner, James – 1983
A series of three experiments was conducted for the purposes of (1) clarifying problems of previous research on the relationship between working memory capacity and performance on figural analogy tasks, and (2) exploring developmental issues concerning executive strategies, working memory capacity, and perceptual processing. Directly manipulating…

Cronin, Virginia – Journal of the Association for the Study of Perception, 1982
Reports the results of two experiments dealing with children's visual and tactual performance. In the first task, after several presentations of a series, the tactual group made almost errorless discriminations. But with memory demands, tactual performance became poorer than visual performance. Found a large developmental difference. (JAC)
