Creating Meaningful Spaces for Community College Scholarship
Doran, Erin; Lucht, Kayla
Journal of College Student Development, v62 n4 p505-507 Jul-Aug 2021
In thinking about their experiences as community college advocates, Erin Doran and Kayla Lucht found that they both came to community colleges as adjuncts to supplement their incomes--but that a deep admiration and love for their students kept them there. Like so many others in higher education, they fell into their roles as community college educators by circumstance, more so than through careful planning. In doing so, they found careers that have been professionally and personally rewarding. However, they continue to constantly need to justify their desire to work and focus on community colleges, even from other higher education professionals. In this article, they offer some points to call in their colleagues from higher education and encourage them to consider community colleges more fully when thinking about research, curricular decisions in student affairs programs and mentoring/femtoring future higher education professionals.
