In view of the need for open-mindedness in the instruction of new curricular approaches, such as the analysis of public issues, these studies survey pre-service social studies teachers to discover their positions relative to other pre-service subject teachers in strength of authoritarian and dogmatic characteristics. A survey of elementary teachers who had participated in inservice programs conducted by the social studies curriculum projects of the late 1960s and early 1970s showed that these projects did have a positive impact on teaching. For example, 60 percent of responding teachers today use a student-centered/process-oriented approach to teaching. (RM)

Considers the effect of an integrated, interdisciplinary curriculum on student achievement, discipline, behavior, and parental involvement. Although an integrated curriculum is not an educational panacea, the results of this study were generally positive.
