Developing a Long-Term Vision: A Road Map for Students' Futures

TEACHING Exceptional Children, v43 n2 p8-14 Nov-Dec 2010
When considering developing educational programs for students with disabilities, one often thinks first of the annual goals and short-term objectives that are included in the individualized education program (IEP). It is important, though, to connect the short-term objectives (the "now") to long-term goals and dreams (the "future"). Making that connection involves a process of defining those long-term goals and dreams and planning backward to develop short-term objectives as well as other educational activities. This article discusses how person-centered planning (PCP) and developing a long-term vision for students with disabilities can provide structure to this process. The authors present two case studies of children with disabilities to illustrate the development and use of long-term vision. They conclude with recommendations derived from literature related to PCP processes and from their own experience of working with students, parents, and teachers on developing a long-term vision.
