Analyses of data from the Youth in Transition panel study of boys in 87 public high schools suggest that school-level values reflecting a subculture of violence have substantial effects on interpersonal violence and other forms of delinquency, and that the school subculture of violence operates through a social control process. An academically competitive environment appears to increase delinquency. (SV)
