Initial Steps toward the Development of School Climate Instruments for Caribbean Schools
Bowe, Anica G.
AERA Online Paper Repository, Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (San Antonio, TX, Apr 27-May 1, 2017)
The purpose of this study was to begin the development of a sound psychometric instrument that could be used to measure school health within the Caribbean region. As initial steps, this study located school climate surveys (teacher version and student version) developed by USA scholars for Chicago inner city schools. In collaboration with a secondary school principal in Jamaica, this study modified the surveys to make them more appropriate to the Jamaican context. The surveys were then piloted at an all-girls secondary school in Jamaica (n= 50 teachers, n = 197 students). Findings on the psychometric properties of these instruments are presented and implications for measuring school quality within the Caribbean region are discussed.
