Perceptions of Prescription Stimulant Misuse among College Students
Henry H. Weis
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, William James College
This study explored college student's perceptions and attitudes towards stimulant misuse. Participants were presented with vignettes describing stimulant misuse and were asked to rate their perceptions of dangerous behavior, academic dishonesty and other similar areas. They then completed scales assessing their past alcohol and drug use, attitudes towards substance use, and attitudes towards academic dishonesty. Results showed that participants who had engaged in past drug use viewed the vignettes as containing less dangerous behavior, results also indicated that vignettes describing more severe stimulant misuse as more indicative of a substance use problem. The implications of these results suggest that college students' past behavior and attitudes impact their perceptions of stimulant misuse.
