This study investigates the correlation between student expulsions due to the zero-tolerance discipline policy and dropout rates in the East Baton Rouge Parish School System (EBRPSS), focusing on students in grades 9-12 from 2015 to 2022. Additionally, it examines potential disparities in dropout rates between the northern and southern regions of Baton Rouge. Utilizing a correlational research design, the study conducts a quantitative analysis of expulsion and dropout data across sixteen high schools in the EBRPSS. The findings indicate a significant increase in dropout rates correlated with expulsions, suggesting that students who are expelled are more likely to discontinue their education. Contrary to assumptions about regional disparities, the analysis found no significant difference in dropout rates between northern and southern Baton Rouge high schools under zero-tolerance policies. These results underscore the need for policy amendments that consider the broader educational and societal impacts of zero-tolerance policies. Therefore, the study advocates for a shift towards more compassionate and restorative disciplinary measures, theorizing that such approaches could reduce dropout rates and improve educational outcomes. Overall, it highlights the importance of implementing supportive and restorative disciplinary practices to benefit all students.
