Equity in Health Services for Ageing
Supasit Pannarunothai
Education in the Asia-Pacific Region: Issues, Concerns and Prospects
Health services play one of the important roles in achieving equity in health. In the absence of equity awareness, health services searching for practice excellence will themselves inadvertently be causing health inequity rather than closing the gap. The elderly are increasingly occupying considerable capacities of health services to all. This chapter analyses the situation of the health service for ageing and summarises the problems and obstacles preventing equity in health services. The finding should lead to strategic planning to reduce the gaps in restorative and rehabilitative health among the elderly themselves; otherwise the gaps among intergeneration may be too late and too costly, taking examples of dental health and non-communicable diseases into account. The goals of healthy ageing with converging inequity gaps require the interactions of health services with other social sectors as well as the reorientation of the health services to the whole spectres of acute, intermediate, long-term and end-of-life care.
