Because bereavement is a common experience among college students, institutions of higher education must understand how students respond to death loss to take actions to assist them appropriately. How students cope with the death of someone close to them is tied to their unique developmental status, the climate of the campus, and their personal characteristics. This chapter uses student development theory as a lens through which to consider the ways in which college students respond to and cope with death losses. Both psychosocial theory and cognitive-structural theory are used. The authors also draw on campus ecology perspectives to describe why college campuses are not supportive environments for bereaved students. The article concludes with recommendations for helping students cope with loss.
